CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Billionaire Warren Buffett's investment vehicle, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRKA, BRKB), purchased 10 million shares of hospital operator HCA Inc. (HCA) in June, according to a regulatory filing made available this week.
The $317 million purchase was disclosed in a quarterly financial statement by Berkshire insurance subsidiary Geico Corp. to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The document was obtained by Dow Jones Newswires.
Berkshire, of Omaha, Neb., didn't list the holding in a June filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, a possible sign that the company and Buffett may still receive waivers from the agency to keep such purchases quiet.
HCA, of Nashville, operates more than 100 acute care, general and psychiatric hospitals located primarily in the U.S. southeast.
"We're always happy to have people who are big investors take an interest in our stock," said HCA spokesman Jeff Prescott.
