Mujahideen launched a series of five missiles at the coalition forces base in Paktia that has resulted in a direct hit on an Apache helicopter. The attacked occurred at 1200 hours Sunday when Mujahideen launched missiles at the Machadad camp. Eyewitnesses said that the missiles were fired on the makeshift runway at the camp, where 3 Apache helicopters were parked and one missile resulted in a direct hit that destroyed it. Coalition forces managed to get the other two airborne and fired mortar rounds on the Mujahideen as they were leaving the theatre. No casualties were reported.

According to an military analyst, speaking on the condition of anonymity, mortars are for fixed targets and using them against Mujahideen waging guerilla warfare is a poor military tactic. He also said that it shows that the Coalition forces do not want to engage with Mujahideens unless backed by a large number of forces, which the small base lacked. He further added that during the Soviet Jihad, soviet forces employed similar tactics when they were reluctant to venture out of their bases.

In another incident, Mujahideen attacked a border post in the province of Khost in Dubgi and at least a dozen casualties on the Afghan-American side have been reported. The attack occurred at 0100 hours, and light weapons along with some handheld missiles were used in the attack. Reports indicate up to 12 dead or wounded in the coalition side, which were transported by road to the capital of Khost.

On more attack by the Taliban occurred on American forces but no reports of casualties were received at the time of this filing. The attack occurred at the province of Paktia, near Gardez. American army spokesman Colonel Rodney Davis told AFP that Taliban attacked an American patrol party with small arms and improvised detonation devices but said no Americans were killed or injured. He also said that American forces defused 3 rockets in Gardez, but he did not give any further details.

American forces routinely downplay Taliban attacks in their briefings to keep the lid on the fact that the Taliban have gained a great deal of strength both militarily in the form of new technology and weapons and also now have growing support from the local population who have realized that America’s occupation of the country was for its own monetary self interest.
