Schwarzenegger's improbable script moves to next page
By Associated Press
Arnold Schwarzenegger, the small-town boy from
Austria who yearned for fame and power in America
and Wednesday was elected governor of the nation's
most populous state, is ready to move on to the
next page of his own improbable script.
Schwarzenegger is following the
footsteps of fellow actor
Ronald Reagan who transformed
his star power first into the
governorship of California,
then to the presidency. But his
course is also unique: rising
from an immigrant who barely
spoke English to champion
bodybuilder and world famous
movie star.
Now he is to lead America's most diverse state,
seizing his chance when grass-roots anger at
Governor Gray Davis erupted into the first
recall election in the state's history.
"I came here with absolutely nothing, and
California has given me absolutely everything.
And today, California has given me the greatest
gift. You have given me your trust for voting
for me," he said during his victory speech
Tuesday night, surrounded by his wife, Maria
Shriver, mother-in-law Eunice Shriver and other
relatives of the Shriver and Kennedy political
dynasty.
In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood premiere,
Schwarzenegger was introduced as California's
governor-elect by late-night television show
host Jay Leno and went on to thank hundreds of
cheering supporters who included actors Rob
Lowe and Gary Busey. He and his wife were
showered with red, white and blue
streamers.
It was a scene that seemed unlikely just weeks
ago, as polls showed Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz
Bustamante, his main rival to replace Davis,
with a slight lead.
And just as he appeared to be overtaking
Bustamante, Schwarzenegger was forced to defend
himself against accusations from a parade of
women who said the actor had groped them and
made unwanted sexual advances over the past
four
decades.
He also denied reports that as a youth he had
made admiring comments about Hitler.
By that time, however, it was impossible to stop
the Schwarzenegger juggernaut, which raised at
least $21.5 million for the race.
The schoolboy who once told disbelieving
companions he would become a champion
bodybuilder in America had done it again.
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger, 56, was born in the
southern Austrian farming town of Thal in 1947.
His father, Gustav, was a local police chief
and Nazi Party member.
An investigation by the Simon Wiesenthal Center,
a Jewish human
rights organization to which Arnold
Schwarzenegger has donated hundreds of
thousands of dollars, concluded that
GustavSchwarzenegger joined the party
voluntarily but found no evidence he committed
war crimes.
A harsh disciplinarian who drank heavily, Gustav
never spoke about his past support for Hitler
to his two sons - Schwarzenegger had an older
brother who died in a car crash. In Thal, as
elsewhere in Austria, the Hitler era for
decades remained a topic shrouded in silence
and children almost never asked their fathers
what they had done during the war.
Schwarzenegger is remembered in Thal as a
reserved boy who was obsessed from an early age
with developing his muscles. He would do
pull-ups and other exercises from an iron bar
erected between two trees.
"His only interest was in shaping his body in
hopes of one day becoming Mr. Universe," his
first trainer, Kurt Marnul, told The Associated
Press in a recent interview."His ambition was
so great."
He first captured that title at 20, only a year
after leaving his boyhood home for good. He
ended up winning 13 championship titles,
including Mr. Universe, Mr. Olympia and Mr.
World.
Schwarzenegger gained attention as an actor for
his appearance in the 1977 bodybuilding
documentary"Pumping Iron." He went on to star
in several films, including 1982's"Conan the
Barbarian," 1984's"The Terminator" plus two
"Terminator" sequels, and 1990's"Total Recall"
and"Kindergarten Cop."
His entry to public life began when he became
involved with the Special Olympics. He soon
started an after-school programs foundation now
active in 15 U.S. cities and served as chairman
of President George H.W. Bush's council on
physical fitness.
Last year, he sponsored Proposition 49, an
initiative that would devote as much as $550
million annually to before- and after-school
programs. The measure passed by a large margin
with bipartisan support, although it remains
unfunded because of the state's budget
deficit.
On the campaign trail, Schwarzenegger said he
wanted to be governor to give back to the state
that has given him so much.
"I found a new me," Schwarzenegger said."When I
first came over to America, it was all about
me, me, me. It was like, 'How can I be rich?
How can I build my movie career? How can I
become the most muscular man?' It was all about
me, and then there was like this turn and I
found it was really great to do this."
