I wonder if this isn't the old incompatibility issue between Outlook
Express HTML and Outlook Rich Text Files? If a file is sent from
Outlook using Outlook Rich Text and has an attachment, the file will
arrive with a.dat extension and be unreadable. The key is to have the
sender resend the attachment and attach it to a plain text message. A
possibility, anyway, if these.dat files are attachments. But there are
other.dat files in the system that belong to various programs,
including the OS, or are generated by Windows at bootup.
