Malaysian PM Mahathir denies Bush rebuked him
By Haaretz Service
Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has
accused U.S. President George W. Bush of lying
when he told reporters that he had rebuked
Matathir for his comments that Jews control the
world, the BBC reported on Sunday.
Mahathir also said that a call
by some Jewish groups for a
boycott of Malaysia amounts
to blackmail.
Some ten days ago, Mahathir a
summit of Islamic leaders
that"Jews rule the world by
proxy" and the world's 1.3
billion Muslims should unite,
using nonviolent means for a"final victory."
His speech at the Organization of the Islamic
Conference summit, which he was hosting, drew
criticism from Jewish leaders, who warned it
could spark more violence against Jews.
Mahathir, one of the Third World's senior
statesmen, criticized what he described as
Jewish domination of the world and Muslim
nations' inability to adequately respond to it
as he opened the meeting of Islamic leaders
from 57 nations.
"The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12
million, but today the Jews rule the world by
proxy," Mahathir said."They get others to
fight and die for them."
At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting
in Bangkok just days later, Bush met with
Mahathir and reportedly told him that his
remarks were divisive and wrong.
Mahathir, who is due to retire in just six days,
however rejects the State Department's version
of events, saying that,"It was the biggest
lie. If he'd rebuked me I'm quite sure I would
have rebuked him also.
"If you can tell a lie about the existence of
weapons of mass destruction and go to war
because of it, I'm not surprised if he is
prepared to lie about what he said to me," he
continued
The BBC reported that the Malaysian leader
insists that the president actually apologized
for speaking out against him, after which they
were"walking practically hand in hand."
