Shares of VA Linux Systems (LNUX: news, msgs) fell 42 percent Monday
after the company warned of a first-quarter shortfall. The company said it
will record a larger-than-anticipated loss in the quarter due to a slowdown in
spending by Internet customers. Excluding items, the loss will be in the
between 14 and 16 cents a share, while analysts polled by First Call have
been expecting, on average, a loss of 9 cents. Revenue for fiscal 2001 was
projected at 2.25 times the fiscal 2000 level. That represents a reduction
from a previous guidance of 2.5 times fiscal 2000. The stock lost $12.63 to
$17.38.
