NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said Friday that the settlements he will reach with mutual fund companies will be"painful" and predicted that some companies will cease to exist as a result.
"There will be entities that will disappear. Individuals will face criminal charges," Spitzer said at a conference sponsored by the New York Society of Security Analysts here."That I can tell you with certainty."
Spitzer said that the settlements will go beyond addressing issues related to market timing and late trading that are at the center of the current investigation. He also said he will not agree to a settlement unless a fund company agrees to improve its structure for setting fees.
After bringing charges against the two founders of Pilgrim Baxter & Associates on Thursday, Spitzer said there will be more charges against mutual funds. Spitzer added, however, that future charges may be"less egregious" than the case against Pilgrim Baxter.
