>>Banknote printer De La Rue climbs after strong H1
LONDON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - British banknote printer De La Rue Plc posted better-than-expected first-half profits and on Tuesday and said it expected the strong performance to continue kein Wunder nach dem Brüsseler Theater, boosting its shares by more than eight percent.
The world's biggest non-government printer of banknotes saw pre-tax profit of 19.7 million pounds ($33.5 million) in the six months to September 27, up from 19.6 million the year before.
Three analysts polled by Reuters had pencilled in profits of 17.6-18 million pounds.
De La Rue (LSE: DLAR.L - news) 's shares were up 8.4 percent to 287 pence in early morning trade, valuing the company at nearly 518 million pounds.
The company said in September its first-half results would beat expectations because it was ahead on a contract to supply banknotes to Iraq, which will be completed in its full year.
"Continuation into the second half of the favourable conditions that resulted in an improvement in underlying first half performance, leads the board to expect a strong second half result," Chairman Brandon Gough said in the results statement.
The firm, which prints national currencies for about 150 countries, held the interim dividend at 4.4 pence.
The firm's last full year had been hit by weakness in its cash-flow systems unit, which sells counting and sorting machines to banks and financial institutions -- themselves hit by slow economies and low investment returns.
Chief Executive Ian Much said in an interview he expected no underlying improvement in the tough cash-flow systems market. It reported lower operating profits at this unit, though ahead of expectations.
"The progress has been as a result of cost-cutting measures," Much said.
The firm has underperformed its benchmark index by one fifth since January 1. <<
