Morgan Stanley pays out bonuses of up to £5m

Christmas came early to staff at Morgan Stanley Wednesday, after the Wall Street investment bank doled out bonuses of up to £5m (€7.1m) apiece to bankers working in its fixed income department in London.

Payouts at the firm, which employs 5,000 staff at its offices in Canary Wharf in London, are on average about 20% higher than last year, boosting bonuses to levels not seen since the height of the dot-com boom. Top bankers in the firm's foreign exchange and derivatives markets have also fared well, scooping between £3m and £5m each. But Morgan Stanley's mergers and acquisitions specialists, traditionally some of the highest paid bankers in the City of London, and its stock analysts, have not done so well, reflecting a dearth of merger activity and a new drive to cut the links between stock pickers and corporate finance work.
