OSLO, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Norway on Monday proposed to re-open the Arctic Barents Sea to oil and gas drilling despite protests from environmentalists but kept one area near picturesque islands out of bounds.
Oil and Energy Minister Einar Steensnaes said that Norway would tighten environmental demands on oil companies drilling in the Barents Sea, closed since 2001 for a review of the impact on fisheries and the environment.
The government also said it would allow oil and gas companies to apply for 95 oil and gas blocks in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea. It excluded the area off the Arctic Lofoten islands, one of Norway's top tourist draws and a major spawning ground for fish.
