Honda Says Small Business Jet Flight Tests Successful
Tuesday December 16, 6:05 am ET
TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday it has developed a compact business jet on its own and succeeded in initial flight tests of the jet in the U.S.
This is the first made-in-Japan airplane in nearly 45 years and Honda is the first Japanese car-maker to complete airplane development without technological or money assistance from the government.
The jet project wasn't based on a certain business plan, but it was the dream of the company's founder Soichiro Honda who launched a vision of manufacturing aircraft in the company's internal magazine in 1962, a Honda spokesman said.
Honda hopes to start the aircraft business in the future, but it has no concrete plans at present, the spokesman said.
Honda said the small business jet dubbed"HondaJet," which is equipped with its"HF118" jet engines, is the first aircraft to be outfitted with a Honda engine.
Honda began research into compact business jets in 1986, using engines provided by other manufacturers.
The Japanese automaker said the new jet is scheduled to undergo about 200 hours of flight-testing to demonstrate and verify the performance characteristics of various systems in the jet.
The jet is 12.5 meters long, with wings spanning 12.2 meters. Its maximum flight distance is about 2000 kilometers.
The jet achieved fuel efficiency over 40% higher than conventional aircraft.
