-->NEW YORK, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp. (nyse: NEM - news - people) on Tuesday said it began developing its Phoenix mine in Nevada and now expects to start mining gold and copper from the site in 2006, one year earlier than originally projected.

The Denver-based company said it expects the mine to deliver annual production of between 400,000 and 450,000 ounces of gold and 18 million to 20 million pounds of copper over a 15-year period.

Newmont expects the initial costs of development of the mine to be about $205 million. In 2004, the company plans to spend about $2.8 million on exploration at Phoenix to define and possibly increase the mine's reported gold reserves.

At the end of 2002, the company estimated that the mine held gold reserves of 6.0 million ounces.
