Japan firms' profit to still rise at 100 yen/$-DIR
Monday January 19, 5:16 am ET
TOKYO, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Corporate Japan would likely still show profit rises as a whole even if the dollar were to fall to 100 yen, the Daiwa Institute of Research (DIR) said on Monday.
DIR, a unit of Japan's second-biggest brokerage, Daiwa Securities Group (Tokyo:8601.T - News), said it had calculated the dollar/yen (JPY=) rate at which various corporate sectors would show a fall in operating profit for the business year starting in April.
For the auto or transport equipment sector that level was 102.4 yen to the dollar. It was 96 yen for the machinery sector, 95.4 yen for the electronics sector and 98.7 yen for assembling and processing firms as a whole.
The dollar was trading at around 107.30 yen on Monday, down from around 117 yen last September.
The surge in the yen, which reduces the value of income earned by Japanese firms abroad, has prompted concern among Japanese business leaders, who argue that the rise does not reflect Japan's economic fundamentals.
DIR also said it expected operating profit for firms in the Tokyo Stock Exchange's first section to climb 10.9 percent in the next business year on a two percent rise in sales, using an assumed rate of 107.5 yen to the dollar.
Among sector forecasts for 2004/05 operating income, non-ferrous metals was seen with the biggest percentage gain of 28.5 percent.
Other sectors seen posting double-digit rises included chemicals at 21.1 percent, pulp/paper 18.3 percent, glass/ceramics 17.9 percent, machinery 16.5 percent, marine transport 15.7 percent, electronics 15.4 percent, iron/steel 13.2 percent and precision machinery 12.1 percent.
Transport equipment or autos was seen up 7.9 percent.
