Poland hints at Constitution compromise

Polish deputy foreign minister Jan Truszczynski has hinted that Poland may be ready to discuss a compromise on the voting system in the future EU.
During a meeting of the Green group in the European Parliament in Warsaw, Mr Truszczynski said that Poland is ready to discuss changes to the Nice Treaty.
This is being interpreted as a softening of Warsaw’s stance as the Polish government has until now insisted that the voting system under the Nice Treaty - which is beneficial to Poland - must be kept.
It is over this issue that talks on the draft Constitution broke down last December.
One of the compromise offers worked out by the Polish government would envisage a calculation of national votes in the Council by taking"the square root of the population" per each country which would then be further divided by a given factor.
According to Mr Truszczynski, this option would be more favourable to small and medium sized EU members.
Polish minister for Europe and the country's commissioner after enlargement Danuta Huebner, who was also present at the meeting, pointed out that"there is a possibility and political will to reach an agreement on the EU Constitution even under the Irish presidency".
