Oil Drops $1 as U.S. May Stockpile Less Oil
Friday March 12, 12:55 pm ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Oil prices fell heavily on Friday as a U.S. Senate move to bar shipments to emergency crude stockpiles prompted a fresh retreat from recent year-highs.
London's Brent crude (LCOc1) fell $1.03 a barrel or just over three percent to $31.80 after jumping 84 cents on Thursday. U.S. light crude (CLc1) was down $1.25 to $35.53 a barrel, $2 below post-Iraq war highs hit earlier this week.
Prices fell on news of a newly passed U.S. Senate amendment to the fiscal 2005 budget resolution, which would cancel the delivery of 53 million barrels of crude oil for the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
The Bush administration has been bringing crude into the SPR with the aim of filling it to its maximum capacity of 700 million barrels by next year.
"It's going down because of this budget news," said a London trader. It was unclear, however, if the U.S. House of Representatives would support the Senate's measure.
