About 360,000 people work for more than 160 central banks round the world. But quantity is no guarantee of quality. Over a fifth—82,000—of the world's central bankers work in Russia, where consumer prices are rising by 10.5% a year. Some 55,000 central bankers are employed in the euro area. That is over twice as many per head of population as in the United States. Japan gets by with a mere 5,127 central bankers.
