Mittal pays record £70m for home in Kensington
By Simon Goodley and Sandra Laville (Filed: 12/04/2004)
Lakshmi Mittal, the multi-billionaire steel magnate and
Labour benefactor, is to pay £70m for the world's most
expensive house, a 12-bedroom mansion bought three
years ago for £50m by Formula One boss Bernie Eccleston.
Boasting Turkish baths, a ballroom and a jewelled
basement swimming pool, the property is located next to
Kensington Palace and the London home of the Sultan of
Brunei. It was created when the former Egyptian Embassy
and a one-time annexe of the Russian Embassy were
knocked together.
Extensively renovated in the 1990s by David Khalili, an
Iranian art collector and financier who imported marble for
its floors and pillars from the quarry used for the Taj
Mahal, the home is 55 times the size of the average house
with garage space for 20 cars. Security is controlled by 65
state-of-the-art CCTV cameras.
Yet despite its opulence, Mr Ecclestone never lived there
and the house has remained empty while estate agents
struggled to find the superlatives to describe it.
Mr Mittal, who owns the world's second-biggest steel
producer LMN and is thought to be worth £3.5billion, is said
to be planning to move his family into the mansion.
A spokesman for Mr Mittal would not comment on the sale
but a source close to the tycoon said:"The sale is in the
process of going through. It's a very large sum and while
the two sides have exchanged contracts, these things are
never over until they've been completed." He later joked:
"It's only got 12 bedrooms."
Contracts are believed to have been exchanged last
month. Mr Mittal already owns a £9m house, the Summer
Palace, on the Bishops Avenue in Highgate, North London.
The sale is likely to be recognised by the Guinness Book of
Records as the all-time highest.
The previous record was the £62.7m paid for a property in
Hong Kong in 1997, but it was repossessed in 2001. The
most expensive home currently up for sale is believed to
be Three Ponds in the Hamptons, near New York, with an
asking price of £41m, while American software
entrepreneurs Bill Gates of Microsoft and Larry Ellison of
Oracle have each built £54m homes on the west coast of
America.
Self-made, Mr Mittal grew up in a poor Indian village before
moving to London in 1995.
A contributor to the Prince's Trust, he has met the Prince of
Wales, but in 2001 he sparked a"cash for favours" scandal
after Tony Blair wrote a letter to the Romanian government
on his behalf following a £125,000 payment to the Labour
Party.
A housekeeper at Mr Mittal's north London home said he
was currently in India on business.
Richtig, Stahl haussiert!
Gruß!
