Challenger job cut report 72,184 layoffs announced- up 6.1 percent from March

-->The Challenger job cut report revealed that 72,184 layoffs were announced in April, up 6.1 percent from the March pace, but a 50.7 percent reduction from the April 2003 pace. The job-cut report is not adjusted for seasonal variation, so the monthly figures need to be examined cautiously. In the first four months of 2004, job cut announcements are down 33.3 percent compared with the same four month period of 2003. This is a significant improvement. On an industry basis, the largest job cuts were announced in the government/nonprofit sector in April, followed by consumer products and computer. Last month, the financial industry suffered the highest job cut announcements. While the job cut announcements are still large in number, the figures are moderating and this bodes well for the labor market. Just like new jobless claims, the declines in job cut announcements are moderating at a very slow pace in this cycle
