-->>WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush mostly shuns news coverage because he worries it might cloud his"clear outlook" with what he perceives as a left-leaning bias, he said in a book excerpt published.
>"I like to have a clear outlook," he told the author in one of two interviews."It can be a frustrating experience to pay attention to somebody's false opinion or somebody's characterization, which simply isn't true."
>The Washington Times on Friday released a segment of"Misunderestimated: The President Battles Terrorism, John Kerry and the Bush Haters," which was written by its senior White House correspondent, Bill Sammon.
>The title of the book -- which plays off a Bush malapropism from the 2000 campaign -- covers the war in Iraq (news - web sites), looks ahead to the November 2 presidential election and enables Bush to sound off on topics like his media diet.
>"I don't watch the nightly newscasts on TV, nor do I watch the endless hours of people giving their opinion about things," the president said."I don't read the editorial pages; I don't read the columnists."
>The question-and-answer session took place well before the photographs of abuse of detainees at the US-run Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad sparked a global outcry. The White House says Bush first saw the pictures when they were broadcast on CBS television.
>Bush, who is known for devouring the sports section of newspapers, said he scans the front pages of a few major dailies and, if he finds a particularly interesting story,"I'll skim it."
>White House aides, including chief of staff Andy Card, cull the newspapers for information that they present to Bush, who also relies on First Lady Laura Bush's recommendations in deciding which news stories to read.
>"Since I'm the first one to see him in the morning, I usually give him a quick overview and get a little reaction from him," Card told the author."Frequently, I find that his reaction kind of reflects Laura Bush's take."
