Gold jewellery demand up 21 p.c. in Q1

MUMBAI, JUNE 3. The total consumer demand for gold (jewellery and net retail investment) in India in the first quarter of 2004 has improved by 25 per cent in tonnage terms over Q1 last year to 144 tonnes from 118 tonnes and by 37 per cent in rupee terms to Rs. 9,931 crores from Rs. 6,447 crores, according to a report by the World Gold Council (WGC). This is against somewhat depressed levels of a year earlier. Globally too, the trend has been positive with a 12 per cent increase in consumer demand in tonnage terms to 764 tonnes (683 tonnes) and 30 per cent increase in dollar terms to $10.02 billion ($7.73 billion).

The WGC reports that although complicated by the sharp upward movement in gold price, consumer demand for gold actually increased in monetary terms during the period since 2001.

Commenting on the supply/demand dynamics for the first quarter of 2004, James Burton, Chief Executive of the WGC said,"In the face of a 55 per cent rise in gold price in dollar terms, historically we would have expected consumer demand to recede due to the sensitivity of Asian and Middle Eastern markets to price volatility. Actually, this quarter, the money flowing into gold from consumers was 37 per cent up on Q1 2002 in dollar terms and 25 per cent higher than in Q1 2001, demonstrating a positive underlying trend."

Indian jewellery demand was up 21 per cent in tonnage terms to 119 tonnes (98 tonnes) and 33 per cent in rupee terms to Rs. 7,027 crores (Rs. 5,291 crores) in the first quarter of 2004. The WGC has attributed the rise in demand to conducive price levels, a strong economy, wedding season demand and rural consumers who account for over 60 per cent of demand.
