Over the six months prior to the past 16 elections (1940's through 2000's), for example, the stock market rose 11 times. The Dow Jones Industrial's ($INDU: news, chart, profile) average six-month gain in all 16 instances was 3.2 percent.
But this apparently impressive historical foundation erodes fairly quickly upon further scrutiny. After all, the stock market rises the majority of the time anyway. When viewed from the perspective of equities' long-term uptrend, going up 11 out of 16 times isn't particularly impressive.

Nor is a 3.2 percent return over a six-month period worth getting all that worked up about. That's equivalent on an annualized basis to a 6.5 percent return, which is less than equities' long-term historical yearly average of between 10 and 11 percent.

In other words, even though the stock market has tended to go up during the six months prior to the past 16 elections, it nevertheless has been a sub-par performer over those periods.
