People don't realize that Indian tribes and their territories are like sovereign nations. California is home to 107 recognized Indian tribes. An additional 54 groups have petitions pending with the US Bureau of Indian Affairs seeking to become recognized tribes, according to the anti-gambling groups,"Stand Up for California."
Arnold Schwarzenegger and his aides say they have struck 10 deals with the tribes this summer that will generate a one-time payment of $1 billion this year, and as much as $400 million in annual payments in years to come. San Diego Country is now dotted with as many as 14 Indian gambling casinos, and there are more to come -- and they're getting bigger and more Vegas-like. Actually, the total casino take in California will soon match the total take in Nevada.
The deal now is that California will up its allowance of the number of slot machines in Indian casinos in exchange for a slice of Indian casino profits. It now seems almost certain that California will become the gambling capital of the US and probably the world. One thing is certain -- the Golden State needs all the tax money it can gather. And casinos are where it's at.
