Treasurys rise modestly ahead of data Fed's Greenspan to address banking group
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Shrugging off a firmer stock market
open and an increasingly tenuous White House run for Al Gore,
Treasury investors on Tuesday bid up the government-backed notes
and bonds they sold a day earlier and in overnight dealings.
Analysts said the market was looking to a morning speech by
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and the week's data on
factory orders, productivity and employment to further cement the
case for cutting interest rates.
"Fed funds futures and current Treasury yields are pricing in this
scenario," said Bill Hornbarger, fixed-income strategist with A.G.
Edwards & Sons."The Treasury curve currently stands at
calendar-year yield lows. The environment remains very positive for bonds, with the data indicating a slowing economy and providing plenty of ammunition for the Fed to lower rates."
