Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- The Bank of Korea unexpectedly cut its benchmark interest rate to a record to boost consumer and business spending. The move came a day after the bank said it was ready to stem ``excessive'' currency gains to protect exports.
Central Bank Governor Park Seung and his six fellow policy makers cut the overnight call rate by a quarter-point to 3.25 percent, the bank said in Seoul.
``Consumption, investment, and the construction sector are all sluggish while exports are slowing,'' Park said at a briefing. ``A recovery in domestic demand is being delayed while oil prices and the won helped ease inflation.''
South Korea, Asia's third-largest economy, is counting on increased consumer spending to overcome slowing exports and meet its target of 5 percent growth this year, which was affirmed today by the bank. Growth fell by more than half last year to 3.1 percent as consumers cut spending after a credit binge left millions unable to pay their debts.
