GREENSPAN IS BAFFLED BY ECONOMIC STATS ON INFLATION

December 16, 2004 -- ALAN Greenspan raised in terest rates again this week, but he didn't do it for the reasons you think.
Right now the nation's economy is, at best, growing only moderately by historical standards.

It might have even started to slow, while inflation — the Federal Reserve swears publicly — is not a problem.

So why is the Fed acting so strangely? Why is it trying to slow an economy that's already slowing?

Why is the Central Bank making repeated interest rate moves that ordinarily would be reserved for periods of big growth or at least high inflation?

Because the Fed doesn't believe the official numbers.

In fact, Greenspan and the other policymakers are being told by at least one private source of data that inflation is troublesome and that the falling value of the dollar adds greatly to the threat.

"Even though economic growth has slowed in '04, inflation remains elevated," says a source with whom the Fed consults.
