Inflation und Deflation zugleich: Italiens dolce vita vielfach am Ende
-->The Association of Italian Farmers reported that households spent 10% less on food for the festive season, abandoning luxuries such as champagne and caviar.
Rather than revelling in the dolce vita, Italians are battling with the carovita (the high cost of living). The price of daily staples such as milk and bread has doubled in some areas, and house prices have increased by more than 50% in major cities since the euro was introduced. But the average factory worker still takes home about €800 (£560) a month, and a bank manager makes only twice as much.
Newspaper headlines warn that the"Middle class has gone to hell" and"Italians don't know how they will make it to the end of the month". Women's magazines offer tips on frugal housekeeping, and a poll by Demos found that many Italians expect their children to be poorer than them.
Other surveys show that increasing numbers are turning to God because of fears about looming poverty and disappointment in failed promises of an economic miracle from Silvio Berlusconi.
As they struggle to keep up appearances, scores of middle and working class families are asking local charities for help.
The Catholic charity Caritas, the largest social support system in the country, has warned that with 7 million Italians living under the poverty line, the country is heading for increasing social unrest.
Solche Umstände nannte man früher schlichtweg Teuerung.
d.h. Anstieg lebenswichtiger Preise und zugleich (zumindest relativer) Verfall der Einkommen.
Und ein Ende ist noch nicht in Sicht.
Die Klage"poveri noi"... ach wir Armen, wird bald unüberhörbar werden.
