One of the more persistent rumours of the last couple of days has been that the SNB have been selling CHF - both against USD and EUR. We are now hearing some 'theories' as to the reasoning. Possibly one of the more machiavellian of these is that the French referendum on the EU constitution is moving towards a 'no' vote, and on that basis (apart from the obvious spread trades), this will mean that funds will want to sell the single currency because the whole system will break down. Where to in such an event? Well the answer (we are told) is obvious - the CHF. On this basis, the SNB is creating a buffer ahead of the game. The answer from our Swiss sources - both on the story that they have been busy already, and that they might be for this reason; has been a single word. And we cannot repeat it here!
