-->was, vor allem Männern, scheinbar hilft ihren 'Krebs' zu überlisten:
quote: I had read about Michael Milken, the famous Drexel Burnham trader -- he was the man who started the whole high-yield bond phenomenon.
Milken was diagnosed with a dangerous, rapidly spreading prostate cancer. His doctors had given him 6 months to 15 months to live. Milken, a brilliant and wealthy man of action, plunged into a study of prostate cancer. In fact, Fortune magazine (October 2004) featured a cover story about Milken and the way he beat cancer ("Beating Cancer. Why leaders from Lance Armstrong to Rudy Giuliana have joined Mike Milken's crusade -- and how it's changing medicine."). Milken started a $210 million prostate cancer research facility. Milken and his doctor and scientist friends delved into the whole prostate cancer puzzle.
During his treatment, Milken decided to undergo a total diet change. He was guided heavily by the low-cancer Japanese diet -- but Milken went even further. He cut out eating all animal flesh, he reduced his fat intake to a tiny 9 grams a day, and instead of meat or flesh of any kind he switched to soy and tofu along with vegetables (organic), and fruit. He also took antioxidants and drank green tea every day.
His thesis was that western style eating was killing Americans. Our food is loaded with harmful fats, preservatives, antibiotics, and hormones. On the other hand, fresh organic vegetables and fruits contain valuable anti-cancer elements that we tend to avoid or cook out or smother with butter and other greasy sauces. Most of the vegetable and fruit Americans eat are tainted with pesticides and artificial fertilizers. Milken turned to organic foods as far as possible. He also exercised every day, and he practiced yoga, which released tension and stress.
I was won over by the intelligence of Milken's studies. I decided that Milken's studies were absolutely correct. If the Japanese had 10% of the prostate cancer that Americans had, then Americans were doing something very wrong. We were eating wrong. Our diet was terrible -- it was poisonous. Right then and there, I decided to change my eating habits.
I'm not talking about just dieting. I can't diet. I've tried dieting. I tried low carbs. I tried low fat. I tried Pritiken. Every person I know who has been on a diet soon tires of their diet and ultimately reverts back to their old habit of eating, In my opinion, diets don't work -- or they work for a while. No, instead of a diet, I'm talking about a CHANGE IN LIFE STYLE.
So here's what I've done. I've changed my life style. I've cut out all red meat, I've cut out most chicken, although I may occasionally eat a bit of hormone-free chicken or turkey. I will eat only wild fish, none of that cultured junk. And, for the most part, I will substitute soy or tofu for meat or flesh of all kinds. Many health food stores sell a baked tofu which can serve as a meat. I like the taste and consistency of this kind of tofu.
In the morning I now make a shake of soy protein isolate, fruit juice and a banana. Blend it, and it makes a great breakfast. Instead of bread, I now eat germinated seed bread which you can get in flat tortilla form or baked into loaves. Out here they call it Ezekiel bread, and it's sold in the freezer section of most health stores. I love this bread, and no longer eat the junk bread that is sold to 99% of Americans.
For desert I eat organic fruit although I allow myself one"slip." I eat a few tablespoons of a delicious chocolate sorbet. It's totally nonfat and is carried by the Vons-Safeway chain. Probably other chains carry nonfat sorbet as well.
Prior to my new way of eating, my"normal" PSA was 4.00. Today it has dropped to 3.50. I've been on my new life style for two months now, and I've dropped 13 pounds (mostly off my belly) which is fine with me. Furthermore, to my surprise I find that I don't miss meat or animal flesh at all.
By the way, my wife, Faye, has joined me in our change of life style. She's all for it, and she likes it. She says she's never felt better with the change.
Oh yes, one more thing. A few months ago Faye and I decided to drop the drinking habit. We used to drink a glass of wine or a cocktail every evening. We cut that out, and we feel better for it. Water will suffice. We don't need the alcohol, which is just added calories with no nutritional value. I also have a cup of green tea every day. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants and it can take the place of coffee.
We've also joined the community supported agriculture, or CSA, group here in San Diego. This is a group of farmers who grow organic food. It costs about $20 a week, and each week they deliver a box of whatever vegetables or fruits are in season. It's all organic, and it's more than Faye and I can eat in a week. What we don't eat, we give to our friends.
That's my story. My prostate cancer scare got me to change my life style, and I can thank Mike Milken and his remarkable research for the change. Mike, if you're ever in La Jolla, give us a call. We'll make you a dinner that you can eat.
