Bloombergkommentar: Der Benzinpreis spielt keine Rolle: SUV-Absatz steigt steil
-->For the month of July, light-truck sales accounted for 59.1 percent of the total compared with 38.6 percent for cars. No wonder my visibility on the road is so poor.
Sales of pickup trucks, which are becoming increasingly popular vehicles-about-town for soccer moms, soared last month. Led by a 58 percent jump in sales of GMC Sierras and a 49 percent increase in Chevrolet Silverados, the market share of large pickups rose 3.5 percentage points to 18 percent from the same month a year earlier.
Crossing Over
``Any impact from gas prices is on new vehicle sales in general,'' says Haig Stoddard, manager of industry analysis at WardsAuto.com.
The slowdown in sales of some big SUVs, such as the Chevy Suburban, is model-specific, Stoddard says. ``The Suburban is late in the product cycle.''
Looking at the latest monthly sales figures, there's not much evidence of any gas-price effect on new vehicle sales. July was the third-best month on record for U.S. auto sales, with 20.9 million units annualized.
Well before the spike in gas prices, a growing share of the light-truck market was migrating from SUVs to CUVs, or crossover utility vehicles. CUVs offer the ride of a car and the heft of an SUV -- and significantly better gas mileage (22-23 miles per gallon).
That's not much consolation to a small-car driver like myself. Whether it's the Ford F-150 or the Ford Freestyle, one tailpipe looks pretty much like the next from where I sit.
``People complain about gas prices, but they don't change their buying habits,'' Lindland says. ``We've been saying that gas prices have to hit $3 a gallon and stay there for six months to see a change in behavior.''
