The greatest fear of the US political establishment is such a “backwards” move towards a pre-1898 status.
Any retreat from European soil would set that in train. To maintain itself in its present global reach, the US must act to maintain strategic control in Europe. The problem is that NATO is losing ground by the week. Failing that, the US must bring about a geo-political situation inside Europe which Europe itself has no possible way of resolving. What fits this last criteria with near perfection is the entry of Turkey
into the European Union. Once there, Turkey and all the many millions of Turks now inside Europe can be made to cause an uproar in Europe. The US easily could easily bring this about by throwing its weight around in Iraq or anywhere else across the Middle East. That would set up a situation inside Europe like the one which Great Britain felt in London when some British born Muslims committed terrorist attacks.
There are presently about 10-12 million Muslims from many lands spread all over Europe’s major cities.
Think about a situation where there are an additional 10-20 million or more Turks in the cities of Europe while the US still in place in the Middle East and able to act to outrage all Muslims.
