Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. jobless claims rose for a ninth month in October, extending the longest period of increases in almost 13 years, as slowing economic growth forced companies to cut costs.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefit climbed a larger-than-expected 12,100 from September to 890,100, the Office for National Statistics said in London today. Claims were forecast to rise 5,000, according to the median of 34 estimates in a Bloomberg survey. The jobless rate held at 2.8 percent.
