Housing starts schwächeln

-->Housing starts fell back sharply in October following their surprise spike in September, down 5.6% to a 2.014 million annual rate, the lowest since March. Permits also fell back, down 6.7% at 2.071 million.

September's starts were revised a bit higher as was August for a small net gain. The Commerce Department said there has been little if any hurricane impact on the data.

Starts for single-family homes, the biggest, strongest, and most important category, fell 3.7%. Multi-family starts, which are more volatile month to month, plunged 14.8%. All regions showed weakness though the South, which posted a surprise climb in September, showed the least weakness, dipping only 0.5% in the month.

Housing completions were unchanged from September at 1.964 million. Homes under construction slipped back slightly to 1.372 million.
