[16:22:22] US FDA ASKS ROCHE FOR MORE DATA ON 12 DEATHS OF CHILDREN WHO TOOK TAMIFLU IN JAPAN
11/17/05 5:20 PM
ZURICH, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Stock in Roche Holding AG
<ROG.VX> slipped by around 3 percent on Thursday after U.S.
regulators asked for more information about the deaths of
children in Japan who had been taking flu-drug Tamiflu.
Tamiflu is being stockpiled by governments around the world
as the best available defence against a possible flu pandemic
sparked by avian influenza, and investors have priced
expectations for increased sales of the drug into Roche's stock.
Roche participation certificates were down 2.6 percent at
187.10 Swiss francs, after touching a low at 185.90 francs.
Shares in Gilead Science Inc. <GILD.O>, the inventor of
Tamiflu which reached a royalty deal with Roche on Wednesday,
were down 6 percent at $52.52.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it was reviewing
the deaths and possible mental side effects of the drug after 12
children died who took the drug.
The FDA said in a report the cause of the deaths was
extremely difficult to interpret but that it was concerned about
psychiatric events including hallucinations in children who had
taken Tamiflu.
Roche maintains there was no increase in deaths and
psychiatric events in patients on the drug compared with
patients with influenza in general.
