2006 Automotive Job Cuts Get Jump Start Today
FORD CUTS NOT THE END OF INDUSTRY TROUBLES
NEW YORK -- Just a few weeks after turning in the largest number of
job cuts since 2002, the automotive industry is off to a shaky start in 2006
with today's announcement by Ford Motor Co. that it would be eliminating
25,000 to 30,000 jobs over the next six years.
"Like General Motors, which announced 30,000 job cuts in November,
Ford is attempting to right itself after losing ground to foreign
competition and years of making more cars than the market demanded," noted
John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of global outplacement
consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., which tracks job-cut
announcements daily.
According to Challenger data, the auto sector announced 110,016 job cuts in
2005, which was the largest year-end total since 111,371 cuts were announced
in 2002.
"Of course, when you have major plant closings and job cuts like this from
Ford and GM, it quickly trickles down to their suppliers. We estimate that
about 40 percent of the automotive cuts announced last year came from
suppliers, such as Lear Corp., Visteon, Alcoa, ArvinMeritor, and Dana
Corp.," said Challenger.
Suppliers announced 45,419 job cuts in 2005.
"Falling sales and overcapacity are just part of the problem for the auto
companies. The other major factor that is going to haunt them for years to
come is the burden of pensions and health benefits for the growing ranks of
retirees. General Motors, for example, provides health insurance for its
1.1 million employees, retirees and their dependents. That is taking a huge
toll on the company's bottom line and was a major contributor to its recent
job-cut announcement."
