CHICAGO, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp. (NEM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's biggest gold producer, said on Monday that fourth-quarter profit dropped, even as the price of gold rose.
Earnings were hurt by higher energy and raw material costs as well as legal settlements and asset write-downs, the company said. It also forecast it would sell less gold in 2006 than last year.
Net earnings fell to $62 million, or 14 cents per share, from $190 million, or 42 cents per share, in the same quarter of 2004, the Denver-based company said. Revenue rose to $1.31 billion from $1.2 billion, but for the full year was down to $4.406 billion from $4.411 billion.
The results sent Newmont shares sliding 4.6 percent on the New York Stock Exchange. One trader who declined to be namedsaid it was hard to believe its profitability was down when the price of gold was higher than last year.
Excluding a range of items, the company reported a profit of 35 cents per share. Analysts, on average, expected earnings of 34 cents a share on revenue of $1.36 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
The average realized gold price in the 2005 quarter was $472 per ounce, up from $436 a year earlier.
"We again generated industry leading operating cash flow, despite lower earnings resulting from industrywide cost pressures and the impact of several non-cash accounting write-downs," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Wayne Murdy.
Total costs and expenses jumped 21.5 percent to $1.05 billion from $865 million. It recorded $41 million in asset write-downs versus $13 million a year ago.
For 2006, Newmont forecast consolidated gold sales of 7.98 million ounces at a cash cost of $283 an ounce. That is down from 2005 consolidated sales of 8.6 million ounces at a cost of $236 per ounce.
Consolidated gold sales for the fourth quarter were 2.4 million ounces at a cost of $230 per ounce.
Murdy said this year Newmont will complete its Phoenix and Leeville projects in Nevada, and the Ahafo project in Ghana. In 2008, the company expects to complete its Nevada power plant and the Akyem project in Ghana.
Separately, Newmont said it will proceed with the development of Boddington Project in Western Australia with AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANGJ.J: Quote, Profile, Research)
Murdy said construction of the gold project is expected to cost Newmont between $900 million to $1 billion, with initial production expected in late 2008.
At midday, the stock was down $2.80 at $55.30.
