Bank of America Shares Drop
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Bank of America Corp. [NYSE:BAC - news] led the stock market on a tumultuous ride Friday
morning after rumors of additional loan losses rippled through the market.
Trading in the stock of the Charlotte-based banking giant was halted for more than an hour before Bank of America issued a short
statement denying any such losses.
* Am 16. Januar, siehe unten, wissen wir mehr. 16. Januar = die Iden des Januar...
The Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 240 points in the first half hour of trading before recovering somewhat amid market speculation that the bank
was exposed to bad loans in the California power industry.
* An den Iden des Januar...
``We know of no basis to support speculative rumors about our operations,'' the bank said in a statement. ``We are conducting business as usual. The company has
not experienced any significant losses in derivatives or other trading activities. And the company remains comfortable with its guidance for credit quality in 2001 as
provided to investors last month.''
Bank of America spokesman Robert Stickler would not provide specifics about what the bank was responding to, though did confirm that the power industry rumor
``was one of them.''
The Bank of America rumors spread -- and denied -- before the stock officially opened. The stock fell $3.50, or 6.8 percent to close at $48 on the New York
Stock Exchange.
Despite the denial, continuing investor worries about the health of the U.S. economy also helped push other financial stocks lower. Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C - news)
was down $2 to $53.69, while J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was off $3.06 to $48.94.
The Dow Jones industrial average, which regained about half of its initial losses after the Bank of America denial, headed back lower and finished down 250 points
at 10,662.
In December, Bank of America officials projected lower fourth-quarter earnings than expected, citing high credit costs and nonperforming domestic corporate loans.
* D A S ist es also. Hier längst bekannt. Die sich anbahnende Katastrophe der"domestic corporate loans".
The company disclosed in November that one large loan had been placed on non-performing status and that a significant portion will be charged off. It did not say
with whom it had made the loan.
* Es darf geraten werden. CA-Anleihen? Utilities querbeet?
At the time, bank vice chairman and chief financial officer James H. Hance Jr. said the company estimated $1.1 billion in fourth-quarter net charge-offs and provision
expense. Hance also said the bank was budgeting for higher loan losses and credit costs in 2001.
* Higher and higher... More and more red ink...
The bank reports fourth-quarter and annual earnings on Jan. 16.
* DANN also.
