Lebanon Says Hizbollah To Give Up Arms

Beirut, Lebanon (AHN) - Lebanon said that Hizbollah will not be a major issue in implementing the full requirements of the United Nations brokered ceasefire that ended fighting between the militant group and Israel. The Defense Minister, Elias Murr, said that once certain issues are resolved, Hizbollah will begin handing over its weapons to the Lebanese army.

Hizbollah has said that its disarmament should be"part of a national dialogue" and that the group cannot be forced to give up its weapons. Murr said that once issues such as the disputed Shebaa farms, prisoner swaps and strengthening the military are understood,"Hizbollah arms won't be a big problem."

Before the 34-day war with Israel, the group had been in talks with the Lebanese government about disarming. It had demanded that the Shebaa farms be returned to Lebanon and Lebanese prisoners in Israeli jails freed as a condition for handing over its weapons.

Israel has occupied much of the 25 kilometer piece of land known as the Shebaa farms since the Six Day War of 1967. The UN determined in 2000 that the region belonged to Syria.
