>LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS
>Dear shareholder
>Overall performance
>In the second quarter of our financial year, Durban Roodepoort Deep, Limited has produced improvements in performance compared to the previous quarter and posted its best ever cash profit after capital expenditure of R 15.3 million (US$ 1.9 million). All operations generated cash operating profits.
>Gold production at 8 584 kilograms (275 980 ounces) was 377 kilograms (12 127 ounces), 4% less than the previous quarter, mainly as the result of public holidays. The Crown operations performed well and the results were in line with expectations.
>Cash operating costs were maintained at previous levels and showed a slight decrease in unit cost terms to end at R 54 629 per kilogram or US$ 224 per ounce despite the drop in gold production. The cash operating profit increased by 46% to R 39.5 million (US$ 5.2 million) for the quarter. Cash profits included proceeds of R 8.3 million (US$ 1.1 million) from the sale of equipment.
>Operational performance
>Crown is now performing in"steady state" and achieved its targets for the quarter. All three plants have completed their capital expenditure programmes and have commissioned plant extensions.
>The West Wits spiral plant upgrade has been completed and tonnage increased from 200 000 to 300 000 tonnes per month. Gold production however was lower due to the head grade from the North sand dump being less than planned.
>Underground production is still restricted at Blyvoor due to ore handling constraints. This was further aggravated by development targets not being achieved. A new project manager has been appointed to take responsibility for the project implementation which is currently running three months behind schedule.
>The North West operation has not been able to sustain the grades and consequent gold output of the previous quarter. Production has also been impacted by lower tonnage from underground, principally in the month of December. The operation is now back to targeted production levels.
>The Tolukuma mine in Papua New Guinea, increased gold output and it is anticipated that this level of production will be increased to 200 kilograms (6 400 ounces) per month towards the middle of 2001, as new equipment is brought in. The current life of mine extends to June 2005.
>Outlook
>The management restructuring exercise has now been completed, but this has led to high retrenchment costs of R 6.0 million (US$ 0.8 million). The benefits from this, together with improved controls over materials procurement will only be realised in future quarters. Corporate costs were over budget due to increased auditing and legal support work necessary for 20F filing with Securities Exchange Commission and recovery of monies previously written off. External borrowings were reduced by R 46.6 million (US$ 6.1m) in the quarter and a further R 53.1 million (US$ 7.0 million) debt will be satisfied by the issue of new shares in January 2001.
>Durban Roodepoort Deep, Limited should now remain cash positive in the future and this will lead to an improvement in the balance sheet. The new management team has settled in and I believe that shareholders can look to the future with renewed confidence.
