Preliminary University of Michigan January consumer sentiment
was quite a bit lower than had been expected, at 93.6 vs. 98.4
in December. The last time it was this low was in Oct. '98. More
importantly, the expectations index plunged to 84.2. I'll stand by
my forecast of a recession in the immediate future. And I remain
convinced that the media has done a disservice to our economy.
They're not the cause of a slowdown, but they've helped make it
worse.
