-->Bank of New York's Woolfolk Says Carry Trade `Alive and Well' 2007-03-09 10:34 (New York)
By Karen Moskow and Julie Vaughn
March 9 (Bloomberg) -- Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at Bank of New York, says the carry trade -- borrowing yen at low interest rates, then buying dollars and investing them in higher-yield assets -- is ``alive and well.''
He spoke in an interview from New York City.
On the carry trade:
``The carry trade certainly is alive and well. We did have some profit-taking, some stop-losses over the last week or so. However, I think the overnight action is very welcome.
``We've had the second consecutive day of gains in Japanese equity markets. I think that's calmed some fears, and the yen consequently has eased a bit against the U.S. dollar.
``The interesting thing about that is that the dollar's gains have not been uniform. There is some perceived weakness against the Europeans, particularly as the dollar loses its status as a safe haven of last resort.''
On where the yen is headed:
``In truth, dollar-yen's fair value is probably closer to 100.
``That said, the yen carry trade is alive and well in the sense that many have used very inexpensive borrowing from Japan to invest in very high-yielding assets such as emerging-market equities. So a pullback in the Japanese yen of 5 1/2 percent over the past week'' isn't ``enough to trigger stop-losses. So we see that a majority of yen carry trades are alive and well.''
Closing am 9.03.07: 22.00h MEZ: Yen 117.90 per USD1.00.
