It's not the Big Three anymore
Ever since a German automaker bought the Chrysler Corp. in 1998, creating DaimlerChrysler AG, journalists have been trying to decide how to collectively identify DaimlerChrysler, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

They've long been known as the Big Three, but it doesn't seem right to continue calling them by that name because DaimlerChrysler is headquartered in Germany. Many writers, yours truly included, have settled on the"Detroit Three." That includes DaimlerChrysler's domestic unit, known as the Chrysler Group.

The old Big Three aren't even the big three anymore from a sales standpoint. Toyota Motor Corp. last year surpassed DaimlerChrysler in U.S. sales for the first time.
