Eurosystem Gold Sales 443 Tons To Date Under Ctrl Bk Deal-WGC
By Melanie Burton
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LONDON (Dow Jones)--Eurosystem central banks sold around two metric tons of gold in the week ended Sept. 21, bringing total gold sales during the third year of the Washington Agreement to 443 tons, World Gold Council Economic Advisor Jill Leyland told Dow Jones Newswires.
Gold sales under the agreement, which covers 16 European central banks, are limited to 500 tons a year over a five-year period. The quota year runs from Sept. 27 to Sept. 26.
However, Leyland said in a telephone interview that the current data doesn't include sales in September by CBGA signatory Swiss National Bank, which isn't a member of the Eurosystem.
"If the Swiss sold in September at a broadly similar rate to what they sold in July and August, at around 34 tons, the total (for the current year of the CBGA agreement) would be between 470-480 metric tons," Leyland said.
This is barring any"unusual" activity in the remaining days of the agreement, she added.
The Eurosystem's reserves of gold and gold receivables decreased EUR34 million to EUR171.868 billion, the European Central Bank said Tuesday.
