The record low level of the dollar is not a crisis for most consumers, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke said today.

'If somebody has their wealth in dollars and they are going to buy consumer goods with dollars like a typical American, then the decline of the dollar, the only effect it has is it makes imported goods more expensive.'

Bernanke was responding to criticism from Texas Republican Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul that the dollar's decline had 'robbed' Americans of their wealth.

Bernanke, Fed economists and others have said that even the dollar decline's effect on import prices is significantly less than the percentage drop would indicate....
