ISRAEL PREPARES TO INCREASE RESERVE MILITARY DUTY


TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel plans to significantly increase reserve military duty over the next year as part of efforts to prepare for regional war.

Military sources said reserve duty over the next year will be doubled. They said this is a reversal of plans drafted less than a year ago that called for a reduction of reserve duty amid hopes that a peace accord would be signed between Israel and the Palestinians.

But the sources said that the military has dubbed 2001 as the"year of readiness" for a war with the Palestinians and their Arab allies. They said the military has been given hundreds of millions of dollars for the increase in reserve duty to allow the standing army to train for war.

Israel expects an escalation in attacks from Palestinian forces, including the Palestinian Authority and its Islamic opposition. This will include attempts to bomb Israeli targets both in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as well as within the Jewish state.
