Hi Frank, back in the 1960's Daimler Benz (Mercedes) in Germany conducted studies on micro-environments in cars, one portion of their study looked at Ion counts. We only have the following reference from a book on ions and are having great difficulty locating the original paper. Any help in tracking down the paper even a reference to the actual study would be of great help.

The following is all we have at the present:

Mercedes-Benz in Germany was a pioneer with research into the ion effect
in motor vehicles, and concluded that the micro-environment in cars had a
damaging effect on drivers' abilities and comfort. In 1965 Daimler-Benz
examined the effect of electrical force fields in closed cars at the same
time that they studied ionization counts and balance. One conclusion was
that in closed cars, without ion generators, most drivers' reaction time
slows down dramatically.
