ISRAEL'S MILITARY URGES IMPENDING OFFENSIVE
TEL AVIV [MENL] -- Israel's military is urging Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon to approve plans for an offensive against the Palestinian Authority and the Hizbullah in Lebanon.
Military sources said Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Yaalon and several leading generals said such an offensive is required to prove to the Palestinians, Arab states and Iran that Israel is capable of defeating any military coalition. The sources said Yaalon is concerned that what they term Israel's restraint policy is encouraging Iraq and Syria to consider launching a war against the Jewish state.
Yaalon has presented a list of military options to Sharon, the sources said. These include a limited invasion of Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to eliminate Palestinian insurgents. Another is the renewal of Israeli patrols in southern Lebanon to stop Hizbullah attacks.
The plans have been endorsed by Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Shaul Mofaz. But Mofaz has not called for immediate implementation of the plans.
