Nicht nur, dass bei einer vorherigen Schätzung des consumer confidence Indexes von 110,5, dieser mit 106,8 enttäuschte. Vor allem die Erwartungen und Einschätzungen der gegenwärtigen Lage zeigte einen deutlichen Verfall.

<ul> ~ Consumer confidence continued to fall in February. The assessment of current conditions fell by about 6 points while the expectations index fell by more than 10 points. The composite index now stands more than 25% below its peak of May 2000.
~ The expectation component is now about 50 points below its peak of a year ago. Historically, sharp drops of this magnitude have occurred only during recessionary periods.
~ Behind the erosion in current conditions is a decline in the steep decline in perceptions of the labor market. Only 42% of consumers believe jobs are plentiful, down from 49% in January.
~ Despite the battered confidence of consumers, buying plans have remained remarkably firm, bolstered in part by declining interest rates. If consumers keep spending, a recession can be avoided.<ul/>
