Nikkei 225 sees record lows on blue-chip high-tech selling
Nikkei hits 16-year low
TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo's Nikkei average lurched below the psychologically important 12,000 mark on Tuesday morning, led down by steep falls in bellwether high-techs after a plunge in their U.S. counterparts.
"We are at the mercy of the Nasdaq -- there will be no active buying until U.S. technology issues settle," said Yutaka Miura of Shinko Securities, referring to the tech-laden Nasdaq's 6.3 percent dive to 1,923.38 on Monday.
In the first few minutes of trade, the Nikkei average dropped below 12,000 for the first time since February 7, 1985, when it closed at 11,940.80.
Dominated by movements of expensive technology issues since its major component reshuffle last April, falls in high-priced techs such as Advantest Corp. led the Nikkei average 2.96 percent or 360.47 points lower.
It fell as low as 11,710.33 earlier.
Semiconductor-testing equipment maker Advantest shed 8.37 percent or ¥950 to ¥10,400.
The capital-weighted TOPIX index was a hefty 3.30 percent or 39.82 points softer at 1,166.16 -- a level last seen in March 1999.
Securities houses were down sharply due to concerns that steep falls in Tokyo stocks would scare investors away from the market, cutting their commission revenues.
Industry leader Nomura Securities Co. Ltd. fell 5.62 percent to ¥1,930, while Daiwa Securities Group Inc. lost 6.29 percent to ¥984 and Nikko Securities Co. Ltd. was ask-only with no buyers at ¥737, down 7.5 percent from Monday's close of ¥797.
Nomura shares have lost 31 percent over the past year, outperforming the Nikkei average's 39 percent fall.
In the currency market, the U.S. dollar was unchanged against the Japanese yen at the start of the Tokyo business day Tuesday.
The 10 a.m. quote on the Tokyo Foreign Exchange has the dollar at ¥120.27, down ¥25 from its level at the end of the previous business day in Tokyo.
