Tokyo Life Files for Court Protection, Plans Briefing (Update1)
By Tomomi Sekioka, Tak Kumakura, with reporting by Kanna Takeuchi
Tokyo, March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Mutual Life Insurance Co., which has 700 billion yen ($5.7 billion) in debt, said it filed for court protection from creditors.
Tokyo Life, which recently sold its headquarters building to strengthen its finances, will meet the press at 10:30 a.m. local time to give further details, spokesman Toshiyuki Kijima said.
Daiwa Bank Ltd. and other lenders rejected the company's request for 30 billion yen in additional capital, Nikkei English News reported, without citing sources. Tokyo Life spokesman Hiroshi Kanehana declined to comment on the report.
Tokyo Mutual Life's alliance talks with General Electric Capital Corp. of the U.S. have also failed, the Yomiuri newspaper said, without citing sources.
Japan's insurers are struggling because investment returns can't keep up with the yields promised to policyholders amid Japan's stock-market decline and 10-year economic slump.
Daiwa Bank Ltd. will probably revise its earnings forecast for the year through March because it will write off loans provided to Tokyo Mutual Life, the Yomiuri said. GE Capital will help Tokyo Mutual Life through the rehabilitation process, the report said.
