Summary
~ Initial jobless claims fell to 362,000, well below expectations. The weekly movements of this indicator, however, are quite volatile. The four-week moving average fell just slightly to 374,750. This level is consistent with a slowly expanding economy, but remains below the number of claims experienced in past recessions.
~ Continuing claims are rising faster than new claims. More than 2.5 million continuing claims were filed during the week ending March 17. This is the first time, with one brief exception earlier this year, that continuing claims have crossed the 2.5 million mark since 1996.
~ Jobless claims continue to indicate that labor markets are softening, but not dangerously so. It is taking longer to find a new job once becoming unemployed. New layoffs, however, are not causing an undue surge in initial claims. </ul>
